College of Law

Southwest University (SWU) is a key multi-disciplinary university. In July, 2005, Southwest Normal University (SWNU) and Southwest Agricultural University (SWAU) were merged into the new Southwest University , which approved by and affiliated to Ministry of Education of China . In 2006, the Law Department of Politics and Law School of SWNU and Law Department of Humanism School of SWAU were combined as the new Law School of SWU.

In 1985, Law Department of SWNU applied Bachelor Degree in law to the Ministry of Education of China and was approved. Since 1987, the Law Department of SWNU has resumed its undergraduate program on legal education. Step by step, Law School began to offer Master Degree from 2003 . Professor Wu Guangqian, Professor Wei Yiwen, Professor Wang Li, Professor Zhang Xinmin, Professor Zhao Yunfen are functionary in succession. The current dean of Law School is Professor Zhang Xinmin.

Currently, 713 full-time undergraduates and 136 graduates are studying in Law School with a teaching staff of 45 members, including 6 professors, 10 associate professors. Most staffs received their master's or doctorial degree from notable university, such as Renmin University of China, Peking University , Wuhan University , China University of Political Science and Law and so on. Some of them graduated form foreign university. With care and support form relevant departments and all walks of society, the Law School appoints the famous jurists such as Li Changqi, Zeng Xianyi, judges and prosecutors as the part-time professors.

The Law School sets up six teaching and research groups, including Jurisprudence, Criminal Law, Civil and Economic Law, Procedure Law, Practice Education and Bilingual Education. In addition, The Law School has “Agriculture, Country and Peasantry” research center, Social Policy and Law research institute, Criminal Judicial research center and rich book and video resources. The Law School also attaches such importance to legal practices in education that one judicial technical laboratory and one legal clinique can be used as moot judgment, moot arbitration and so on.

Today's Law School has formed a sound and multiform education system with full-time undergraduates and graduates education as its focus, and full-time and part-time adult higher and network education as its sideline. What's more, the bachelor degree can be awarded to the undergraduates minoring in law as the second specialty. The Law School pays attention to the international intercourse. By now, the Law School has established various academic relations with Germany , America and so on.

The Law School of SWU will seize the historical opportunity brought by the West China Development, carry forward the fine school management tradition, hold together, struggle hard, and be creative to develop itself into a first-class law school in China .
